England's Deprivation on Google Maps

The Guardian newspaper says that the Indices of Multiple Deprivation are "possibly the most significant research into poverty in England ever put together". The Indices, study poverty across a range of significant indicators to try and work out which places in England are the poorest.

The Open Data Blog has created a Google Maps based application, called the Indices of Deprivation Explorer, to enable users to browse the data by location.

The map lets you explore the 50 most deprived and the 50 least deprived areas in England. As well as displaying the overall Indices of Multiple Deprivation the application allows you to view individual indices of deprivation, such as crime, housing, health and income.

Standard and Poor's downgrading of the USA's credit rating to AA has sent shock-waves around the world.



You can consult this Standard and Poor's Credit Rating Map to see the current credit ratings of countries around the world. The map was created with the Ikimaps Google Maps creation tool.

Australian Social Diversity on Google Maps

Arek of the All Things Spatial blog has created a series of Google Maps to highlight social diversity in New South Wales, Australia.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics attempts to quantify socio-economic diversity for geographic locations with a suite of four summary measures called Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA). Arek has imported the Bureau's data for the four measures into Fusion Tables and created a map for each.

Each map provides a heat-map visualisation of one of the measure. In each map you can click on any of New South Wales' postal areas to view the area's rank and decile.

UK Average Incomes on Google Maps

The UK's Office of National Statistics has used Google Maps to show the average household income estimates for different areas in England and Wales.

You can select the income measure you want to view on the map via a drop-down menu. By clicking on the map you can then view the average household income estimate at that location. You can also search the map by an address or a postcode.

The map seems to show that the nearer you live to London the more your average income is likely to be. There are a few pockets of high earning areas outside the capital but it would be interesting to compare the data on this map to a map of commuting times into London.

California School Funding on Google Maps

California School District Funding

This Google Map shows school district funding in California. Using the map it is possible to view funding levels in each district and also view the school district's academic performance.

If you click on a school district you can view details of the funding over the last three years together with a projection of the funding next year assuming there is no tax extension in California.

The map also displays State Senate districts. If you click on a Senate district you can view the name and party affiliation of the district Senator and their winning margin.

A Google Map of English Deprivation

England Deprivation Mapped

The most deprived area in England is Jaywick Sands in Essex, according to this deprivation map of the country.

The Guardian newspaper has taken the Indices of Multiple Deprivation published by the Department for Communities and Local Government to create this Google Map of deprivation in England. The Indices look at poverty across a number of indicators to try and work out which places in England are the poorest.

The Guardian has added the data to Google Fusion tables along with shapefiles for individual wards from the Office for National Statistics. The result is this Google Map that allows you to click on any location on the map and find out its 'Deprivation Score' and 'Deprivation Rank'.

Government Cuts on Google Maps

'Deficit reduction' certainly seems to be the buzz word of the decade. In the UK the British government is cutting public spending as if there will be no tomorrow. Almost as fast as the cuts are being made a new Google Map appears to try and show the impact of the cuts around the country.

Cutsmap

Channel 4 News has created a crowd-sourced Google Map of spending cuts in the UK and have asked users to submit their own knowledge of cuts to the map.

The map markers are colour-coded by category and the categories can be filtered on the map via a drop-down menu. Anyone who knows of a spending cut not mapped can report it to Channel 4 and it will be plotted on the map.

Public Sector Cuts Mapped

The Guardian newspaper reports that "organisations across the country are closing and losing services as councils and public bodies implement swingeing cuts from April." To document the cuts The Guardian has built this Google Map.

The tabbed sidebar organises the cuts by category, for example, health cuts, education etc.

Where Are the Cuts

Where Are The Cuts? say there is no 'official' list of about what is being cut and where, so they made this Google Map to help inform the public what is being cut in their area.

The cuts on the map have been collected from official sources or entered directly by users of the map. It is also possible to browse all the cuts displayed on the map in list form.

Mapping the Recovery Act

Signs of a Failed Stimulus

The website for Republican Members of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform are using Google Maps to show the location of billboards that display where money has been spent as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The Republican members of the committee claim that $192 million stimulus dollars are being spent on these signs. If you click on any of the map markers you can view the submitted sign. Strangely information about the number of jobs created by the projects behind each sign is missing from the map.

USDA ARRA Projects Map

The USDA ARRA Projects Google Map shows the locations of United States Department of Agriculture projects funded by the American Recovery Act of 2009.

Is is possible to search the map by location, by agency or by funding amount. The map also includes some cool navigation tools, such as mouse-over state overlays and marker clustering. There is even the option to add your own comments on how your tax dollars are being spent.

Google Maps Of Govt Spending and Cuts

Where are the Cuts?

The economic downturn has led a number of governments to launch stimulus packages to try and boost the economy. Around the world there have been a number of attempts to map these stimulus packages. In the UK the British government have taken a different approach and are drastically cutting public spending.

Where are the Cuts uses the Ushahidi crowd-sourced mapping platform to try and crowdsource where the cuts in spending are taking affect. You can use the Where are the Cuts Google Map to view where cuts have been made in locations around the UK. If you know of a cut that has not yet been mapped you can add it to the map.

Nation Building

In Australia the government have created a Google Maps mashup to show where the country's tax dollars are being spent as part of the federal government's stimulus plan. To ensure that the program is delivered with full transparency the Australian Government has created an entire website, Nation Building - Economic Stimulus Plan, which is dedicated to news, stories and progress reports so citizens can monitor how their money is being spent.

The Google Map plays a large part in showing where and how the money is being spent.

Canada's Economic Action Plan

In Canada the GoogleMapsDev team have used the Google Maps for Flash API to map over 7,000 projects funded by the Canadian Government as part of its $61 billion dollar economic stimulus package.

USDA ARRA Projects Map

In the USA USDA have created a Google Map to show where and how the United States Department of Agriculture, United States Department of Housing and Urban Development and United States Department of Commerce projects (funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009) are putting Americans back to work and rejuvenating the nation's economy.

Third World America on Google Maps

Third World America

The Huffington Post have created a Google Map to record the experiences of Americans hit by the current economic downturn. The map is obviously also being used as a bit of a marketing tool for Arianna Huffington's new book, 'Third World America'.

The map shows the areas hardest hit by home foreclosure, unemployment and bankruptcy. Users can also submit their own stories, pictures or video of how they have personally been affected by the financial crisis.

The map itself is a very simple My Map, which I can't help feeling is a bit of a shame. The map contains really important stories that need and deserve to be told. I just wish that the Huffington Post had taken a little more time and care with the presentation of these stories.

However I guess if anyone wanted to present this in a more elegant way they could just use the georss or the KML of the My Map.

Google Map of Virginia's ARRA Spending

The State of Virginia has created an official website using Google Maps to help show where and how it is spending federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds.

The site initially uses a static image of a Google Map overlaid with an image map. The image map contains links that allow you to click on a locality to view the State Government Award details for that region.

When you click on a locality on the map you are taken to a dedicated page for that locality. The dedicated page includes a Google Map and the details of how and where federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds are being spent.

Google Map of Social Enterprises

OpenAction: Group Map

iuMAP is a tool to access information about 'bottom of the pyramid' social enterprises. The tool is a Google Map showing the location of sustainable businesses.

Each of the markers on the map represents a business that alleviates poverty through job creation in poor communities and / or by delivering products or services which satisfy an unmet social need such as healthcare, education, or energy.

If you click on a marker an information window opens with the name of the business and a short explanation of the nature of the business. The window also includes a link to read more about the business on OpenAction.org.

The map displays three categories of marker, City & Surroundings, People & Society and Knowledge and Innovation. If you pan or zoom the map the markers are updated automatically to reflect your current view.

Google have released a report that details the company’s economic impact in all 50 U.S. states. But why read a report when you can get the bottom line just by clicking on a state on a Google Map?

Across the U.S. Google's search and advertising tools generated $54 billion of economic activity in 2009. Google's Economic Impact Google Map shows how the search giant has helped hundreds of businesses in every U.S. state.

If you click on a state on Google's Map you can view the total amount of economic activity and how many state businesses, website publishers and non-profits benefited. Each information window also includes a link to download that state's report.
