Barcelona's Mobile Friendly Websites Map

According to Google if smart-phone users have a poor mobile browsing experience 61% of them won't visit a website again. To coincide with the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona, Google have partnered with the Barcelona City Council to create Barcelona Go Mobile.

For the initiative Google helped businesses and landmarks in Barcelona optimise their websites for mobile phones. The Barcelona Go Mobile Google Map is a guide to mobile friendly websites in the Catalan capital.

The map allows users to search and find mobile friendly websites via a number of categories (culture, hotels, restaurants etc). If you click on a marker you can view screenshots of the selected website before and after it was optimised for mobile browsing. You can also click on the screenshots to visit the selected location's mobile website.

Spanish Potholes Spread Worldwide

Otrobache.es is a Spanish pothole reporting website that seems to have taken off worldwide.

Otrobache.es uses Google Maps to allow users to report and view reported potholes. The application began life as way for Madrid road users to report problems with the city's roads but the application has proved so popular that it is now being used around the world.

Otrobache.es is just the latest in a fine tradition of pothole reporting websites. In the UK you can report potholes to the FillThatHole website. In the US SeeClickFix allows users to report all sorts of non-emergency problems (including potholes). In Pune, India you can also report road conditions to Better Pune.

Madrid's Tech Companies on Google Maps

Madri+d Mapa del Conocimiento is an interesting Google Map of Madrid's research, technology and science companies.

The map is embedded in Flash, so I assume it uses Google's now deprecated Google Maps for Flash API. By using Flash the map is able to create some interesting visual effects such as elastic map markers (that expand when you mouse-over them) and lines between map markers (that presumably show connected companies).

I'm sure that many of the interesting visual effects used by Mapa del Conocimiento could be replicated with HTML5, which would make the site more compliant with web standards.

Seville's Public Buildings on Google Maps

Mirador - Diputacion de Sevilla is a Google Map showing information about all public owned buildings in the Spanish municipality of Seville.

The map shows the location of all public buildings and each building's footprint. Users can click on the public buildings displayed on the map and receive information about the services provided, the measurements of the building, and get directions on how to get there.

Each building's information window also includes two tabs to view a photo gallery of the town or village and data about the public buildings in the area.

Cycling in Madrid with Google Maps

Mapa de la Bici de Madrid is a nice bike map for Madrid. As well as showing bike lanes, recommended roads and planned cycle routes in the city the map also includes a number of useful tools for cyclists.

The map includes a measuring tool, a search option and quick links to zoom to different districts in the city. It even includes coloured arrows on the cycle routes to show the rate and direction of incline at different positions on the route.

Track and View the ISS with Google Maps

The Universidad Complutense de Madrid has created an ISS Real-Time Map to track in real-time the position of the International Space Station as it orbits the Earth.

The map shows in real-time the position of the ISS with a red polyline showing the station's path for the current day. The university has also created an OpenStreetMap that shows the future paths and times of the space station over Spain.

Astro Viewer also provide a real-time Google Map of the ISS. Astro Viewer not only allows you to view the current position of the ISS but also allows you to view a list of the next sighting opportunities for your location, with a visibility indicator that predicts the brightness of the ISS on its pass.



If you are keen to view the International Space Station with your own eyes then SightSpaceStation is a great guide to where you should look in the sky. SightSpaceStation allows you to view a Google Map of the location of lots of satellites.

The application includes a Street View option that allows the user to view a chosen satellite superimposed on top of Google's Street View imagery. This is really useful as it shows the direction and the elevation of the satellite as it passes overhead.

Using SightSpaceStation you can find out exactly where you should be looking to view the ISS as it passes overhead.

All of Seville on Google Maps

If you live in the Spanish town of Seville then this Google Map contains just about all the local information that you will ever need.

The map shows the location of parks, cycle paths, transit lines and routes and the locations of public buildings (police, health, schools, libraries etc). As well displaying local points of interest the map contains videos, photographs and 360 degree panoramas.

Spanish Election Results on Google Maps

Vizzuality have a history of producing some of the most interesting and beautiful Google Maps applications. Their latest effort for the Spanish broadcaster RTVE is up their with the best of them.

The map presents the 2011 Spanish electoral results in the context of historical electoral results and a vast range of demographic indicators. Using the map you can view electoral results since 1987 and discover how the electoral and socio-economic landscape of Spain has evolved over the last few decades.

The map allows you to visualise 15 datasets at 3 different administrative levels over more than 20 years. All the data is visualised on the map using colour coded custom tiles and the result is a great looking map that presents a huge amount of data via a user friendly interface.

Spain's Nuclear Power Plants Mapped

Since the recent disaster at the Fukishima Nuclear Power Plant we have seen a number of Google Maps that show the location of nuclear power plants around the world.

For example Zeit-Online created the American Nuclear Power Plants Map to show how many Americans live near nuclear power plants. Another trend has been to create Google Maps that display radiation measurements.

Radiactivdad is a Google Map that displays the locations of Spain's nuclear power plants and also the results of radiation monitors in the country that have been connected to the web using Pachube.

The Rain in Spain Falls on Google Maps

El Tiempo

Spanish newspaper El Mundo has created a very nice Google Map to show the weather in Spain.

The map's default view displays today's weather, however you can use the numbered icons at the top of the map to view the forecast for the next three days. If you click on any of the weather icons displayed on the map you can view today's weather at that location and view a quick three day forecast.

The map also includes a number of optional overlays to view precipitation and maximum and minimum temperatures.

Welcome to the Sounds of Galicia

Escoitar

Escoitar is a collaborative sound map for the Galician region in north-west Spain. Using the map it is possible to listen to the waves washing against the shore in Gijon, the ringing of the church bells in Trives and the ambient hustle and bustle of Ourense at night.

There is something particularly evocative about sound maps. Different categories of sound are displayed on this map with coloured map markers. The categories include nature, mechanical, people and religion.

Spanish Gas on Google Maps

enCooche.com

enCooche.com is a Spanish website that lets you find the cheapest gas in your area.

You can enter a location and the type of fuel you need and enCooche returns a Google Map of available gas stations and their current prices. The prices are also lised in the map sidebar, which is quite handy to find the cheapest price at a glance.

If you click on a map marker you can get further details about a gas station. The information window also contains a handy tool that lets you work out the total price for the number of litres you wish to buy.

Donde Repostar Gasolina

This Google Map will find the cheapest gas stations for locations in Spain.

The map has a search engine so you can search for any location in the country and the results are then tagged on a Google Map. Clicking on a tag reveals the current price for gas at that gas station. The prices are all scraped from the website of the Ministry of Industry so should be very accurate.

Real-Time Planes & Ships on Google Maps

This amazing Spanish Google Map seems to have set itself the task of tracking in real-time just about anything that moves. The map shows in real-time the location of ships, planes, mobile phones and satellites in and around and over Spain.

A really nice feature of the map is that as well as viewing the real-time locations of the ships and planes you can select an individual vessel and view an animation of its movements over the last 24 hours. It is also possible to select to view wind speeds and the current weather forecast on the map.

The mobile phone tracking seems to track just the one phone (presumably the map's creator). When I viewed the map it showed only the one track in Burgos. There are also a lot of other features to play with on this map. It shows upcoming boat races in Spain, the locations of weather stations, information from Spanish marinas and the position of satellites.

Spanish Real Estate on Google Maps

Zangoa

Spanish website Zangoa uses Google Maps as the main portal to holiday rental properties in Spain.

From the main map page you can select to view rental properties on the map by location, price and type of property. The returned map markers all contain links to the main page on the selected property.

On the property dedicated pages you can also choose to view another Google Map of the property, this time with local points of interest displayed on the map as well. The points of interest include local restaurants and sporting and cultural activities.
