Viewing Historical Maps with Google

Hypercities

Hypercities is a Google Maps mashup of historical maps of some of the world's cities. Hypercities allows the user to navigate a selection of historical maps using the familiar Google Maps navigation tools.

It is a year since we first featured Hypercities on Google Maps Mania. In that year Hypercities has added Lima, Ollantaytambo, Rome, Tehran, Saigon, Shanghai, Seoul, Tokyo and London to the original list of cities of Berlin, New York, Los Angeles and Tel Aviv.

If you navigate to one of the mapped cities you can view the historical maps that Hypercities has to view. For example, in London you can view John Snow's famous cholera map superimposed on Broadgate Street.

Nothing Like Australia on Google Maps

Nothing Like Australia

Nothing Like Australia is a Google Map from the Australian Tourism agency that features almost 30,000 images and stories submitted by the Australian people.

The opening page of the website shows a gorgeous looking Google Map of Australia overlaid with thousands of photographs. Clicking on any of the thumbnail photographs loads the picture and the associated 'experience'. You can save the experience to your favourites, you can zoom in closer to its location and you can favourite the user who posted the experience.

From July users of the map will be able to share their own experiences on the map.

Track Your Kids With Google Maps

ZenTracker

ZenTracker can track your child's location in real-time and send you messages if your child leaves a designated safe area. This child tracking application is built on top of the Google Maps and Google Latitude API's.

To keep track of your children your child's smartphone needs to be able to run Google Latitude. Google Latitude then keeps track of your child's location. ZenTracker regularly requests your child's geolocation from Google's servers. ZenTracker then checks the smartphone location against user-defined rules and sends you a notification if the location matches a specific rule, for example, your child has left a defined safe location.

Using ZenTracker users can define safe perimeters, such as the home or their school, so if a child leaves these areas a message will be sent to the parent.

Tracking Your Clothes with Google Maps

Rapanui

Eco-fashion retailer Rapanui is using Google Maps to help inform customers about the carbon footprint of each of their products. The map allows users to investigate the complete supply chain of products from source to dispatch.

The maps shows where the raw materials are obtained and the energy used in their production. The map then shows the distance the products travel and the mode of transport used in their shipping.

Rapanui say that you can view a Google Map showing the complete supply chain for every one of their men's and women's products.

Tracking Viruses with Google Maps

ESG Malware Tracker

Enigma Software are using Google Maps to track the location of computers infected with Malware. The map shows real-time data of malware outbreaks across the world.

You can use a drop down menu at the top of the map to select the name of the malware that you would like to view on the map. The map uses data from Enigma Software's own SpyHunter software to determine how many computers worldwide have been infected.

First Google Map using the Google Buzz API

GeoMeme

GeoMeme is the first Google Maps mashup I've seen to use the Google Buzz API.

GeoMeme is a fun way to measure and share real-time local Twitter (and now Buzz) trends on a Google Map. Using the map it is possible to view Tweets from any location in the world. Positive Tweets are streamed on the left of the map and negative Tweets from that location are streamed on the right.

Big Game Hunting with Google Maps

Oregon Hunting Access Map

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) have used Google Maps to show hunting locations in the state. ODFW facilities are shown on the map with yellow map markers and hunting areas are shown with blue markers.

It is possible to refine the hunting locations shown on the map by species. The species themselves are organised into 'Big Game, 'Upland Bird', Migratory Game Bird' and 'Predator'. It is also possible to view a land ownership overlay on the map to check who owns the land where you wish to hunt.
